Intertek & Phantom Product Certification: Why It Matters

If you’re in the process of looking for a motorized retractable screen to add to your home or business property, you might soon find yourself inundated with options. There is no shortage of screen manufacturers across the United States, and this is exponentially more true if you look internationally. However, while the total quantity of screen manufacturers might seem vast, the number of screen manufacturers you can trust to make a quality product is actually quite limited. So, how can you be sure you can depend on the screen you’ve chosen to install in your home? One word: certification.

What is Product Certification?

Product certification is a crucial aspect of ensuring a product is trustworthy; when a product has passed rigorous performance and quality assurance tests, and meets the qualification criteria necessary, it may be granted an accredited certification to verify it is not only built competently — but responsibly as well. This holds especially true in construction; building inspectors in the United States and Canada may often require products and material maintain a level of certification and meet certain safety standards before they can be used in projects. This includes, of course, motorized screens. Not every motorized screen meets these safety standards, nor do they need to — they simply would not be used in official construction projects. However, if you’re looking to install a motorized screen in your home, wouldn’t you want a product that’s used by official builders as well?

Phantom Screens and Intertek

Fortunately, Phantom Screens’ motorized retractable screens are among the only motorized retractable screens on the market to maintain both the safety standards applicable to construction in the United States as well as those applicable in Canada. For the United States, this certification is called the Underwriters Laboratories UL Standard 325 (UL 325). In Canada, the equivalent safety standard is known as the Canada Standards Association C22.2 Number 247-14 (CSA C22.2). This means that Phantom Screens are one of the few screens that are able to be used in construction projects in both the U.S. and Canada.

Both the UL 325 and CSA C22.2 certifications involve safety standards pertaining to electric doors, draperies, gates, and louvers. In both countries, motorized screens are considered drapery products, and thus fall into these safety standards. While the specific qualifications vary, both certifications prioritize safety for the general public, prevention of fire and electrical hazards, proper design, good construction, and high quality of work. To achieve both certifications, all Phantom Screens products had to undergo rigorous and comprehensive testing as well as various inspections to ensure they met several strict criteria. Suffice to say, Phantom Screens do not cut corners when it comes to safety.

The Intertek ETL Listed Mark

In addition to the safety marks granted by UL and CSA above, Phantom Screens products also bear the safety mark from Intertek, known as the Intertek ETL Listed Mark. Intertek has been the leading quality assurance provider around the world — for more than 130 years, Intertek has gone above and beyond to test, inspect, and certify products’ safety through their state-of-the-art inspection facilities and technical expertise.

Intertek’s ETL Listed Safety Mark is truly what sets Phantom Screens products apart from the competition; this mark — enhanced by both the “US” identifier to indicate its U.S. compliance as well the “C” identifier to indicate its compliance with Canadian product safety standards — verifies that the final product meets the appropriate regulations for safety. The significance of this safety mark cannot be overstated; while the US and CSA certifications applied to the individual components of Phantom Screens, it is the ETL Listed safety mark that certifies the final screen product is compliant with any and all appropriate safety regulations.

The bottom line is that product certifications are incredibly important to ensuring the quality of a product is verified and it can be trusted — both for professional construction projects and in your home. Phantom Screens products maintain not just UL and CSA certifications, indicating that the individual components of a screen meet safety standards, but also the acclaimed Intertek ETL Listed certification, meaning that the final screen product has met the requirements for proper design, excellent construction, and overall high quality of work.
