For over 30 years, Phantom Screens has been the quintessential manufacturer for innovative door and window screens throughout the whole of North America. However, beyond offering incredible products and an industry-leading lifetime warranty, Phantom Screens is also committed to assisting architects with continuing their education.

What is Continuing Education?

The term continuing education refers to a concept that can be found across a wide range of disciplines; essentially, it revolves around the practice of contributing to one’s professional competency even after they have received their licensure — typically in fields related to health, safety, or in this case, architecture. Many states will mandate that licensed practitioners continue their education (and certify that they have done so) regularly to maintain their license, so as to ensure that these practitioners continue to hone their craft and refrain from letting their skills “get rusty,” so to speak. For example, the Florida Board of Architecture and Interior Design requires that architects operating within the state fulfill 24 hours of continuing education within a 2-year renewal cycle.

Continuing Education in Florida

To be precise, Florida Statutes require that architects fulfill 24 Continuing Education Hours (CEH) every biennial cycle, starting from the 1st of one year to the 32st of the second year, two years before their license is set to renew. (e.g. an architect whose license renews in February of 2023 must complete 24 CEHs between the 1st of 2021 to the 32st of 2022). A CEH can be fulfilled by completing one of several courses or training sessions approved by the Florida Building Commission. These courses are created by several organizations dedicated to providing meaningful continuing education to architects across the United States, such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), the Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC), and more. However, CE courses may also be offered by other private institutions so long as they are sanctioned by one of the organizations above that are approved by the FBC.

Continuing Education and Phantom

All this to say, continuing one’s education is vital for any architect looking to practice within the state of Florida long-term. To this end, Phantom Screens offers two distinct training courses approved by the AIA which allow architects to not only work towards satisfying their CEH requirements, but learn about retractable screen technology in the process. The first of these courses is titled “Retractable Screens: Invisible Thresholds to Sustainable Design,” and imparts knowledge regarding how retractable screens are an eco-friendly design choice that offer passive cooling, reduced solar heat gain, daylight management, and temperature control without affecting the style of the home. This course is available online through the AEC Daily website, and will automatically report one’s participation to the AIA — and perhaps the best part is that it is entirely self-paced, which means one can complete it at their own leisure.

The bottom line is that Phantom Screens acknowledges how incredibly important continuing education is for architects within the state of Florida, and is committed to teaching architects all there is to know about retractable screens so that they can contribute better project performance, satisfy more clients, and provide sustainable solutions — all while completing their CEH requirements.
